We’ve been making Aquavits for several hundred years now and though the times change our spirit doesn’t. We still believe in high quality ingredients and craftsmanship. Aquavit is quite literally the spirit of the Nordics – in every sense of the term. It captures who and what we are as the Scandinavian people, as it is our national alcohol – crafted and enjoyed through generations.

Each Scandinavian country has its own nuances – this is also reflected in the aquavit, the proud brands and in local preference of taste. The Norwegian, Swedish and Danish products and brands individually offer uniqueness, richness and
craftmanship - Welcome to the World of Aquavit.

Aquavit was first produced in the Nordics back in the 16th century when it was believed to have healing powers – hence the name, which is derived from the latin “aqua vitae” meaning “water of life”.

While we won’t claim any healing effect Aquavit is definitely a drink that we use to celebrate life. We drink an Aquavit when we sit down for a nice lunch. We drink it at Christmas parties. We drink it when we barbecue. We drink it whenever we feel like celebrating and want to add that little extra something.

WHAT IS AQUAVIT MADE FROM?

Aquavit is made from distilled grain or potatoes, flavoured with botanical distillates and spices. Different Nordic countries have different styles of Aquavit.

While Denmark and Sweden consider it a clear spirit with heavy caraway or dill flavours, in Norway there’s a long tradition of maturing Aquavit in sherry oak casks to give a golden colour and full-bodied character with hints of vanilla.

Aquavit has always been a welcome friend when the people of the North sit down to enjoy a nice meal. We especially like it when it’s served with beer as the two really complement each other.

Although an Aquavit is served in a small glass it’s definitely not a shot. Think of it as a glass of wine and take small sips. This way you can savour all the taste nuances and let it complement the food.

AFTER DINNER

An Aquavit is not just great with food. It works beautifully as a digestif when everyone is relaxing after a meal. Why not

refresh your guests with an ice-cold glass of Aquavit on a warm summer night? Or give them an alternative to whiskey when the cold winter days demand a strong spicy spirit to warm them up.

AT THE BAR

While the people of the North pride themselves in the traditional way of life, we are never afraid of adding a twist to the traditions. This is why some of the best bartenders in the North have begun to use Aquavits in cocktails. We’ve added a few examples here, but why not try your own traditional twist at home?
